Nectar of Devotion: Krishna's Flute

Krishna's Flute

As far as His flute is concerned, it is said that the vibration of this wonderful instrument was able to break the meditation of the greatest sages, and Krsna was thus challenging Cupid by advertising His transcendental glories all over the world.
There are three kinds of flutes used by Krsna. One is called venu, one is called murali, and the third is called vamsi. Venu is very small, not more than six inches long, with six holes for whistling. Murali is about eighteen inches long with a hole at the end and four holes on the body of the flute. This kind of flute produces a very enchanting sound. The vamsi flute is about fifteen inches long, with nine holes on its body. Krsna used to play on these three flutes occasionally when they were needed. Krsna has a longer vamsi, which is called mahananda, or sanmohini. When it is still longer it is called akarsini. When it is even longer it is called anandini. The anandini flute is very pleasing to the cowherd boys and is technically named vamsuli. These flutes were sometimes bedecked with jewels. Sometimes they were made of marble and sometimes of hollow bamboo. When the flute is made of jewels it is called sanmohini. When made of gold, it is called akarsini.

Can we request Krsna to force us to surrender to Him, due to our conditioning?

Devotee:
Can we request Krsna to force us to surrender to Him, due to our conditioning?

Prabhupada: Yes, you can request Him. And He sometimes forces. He puts you in such circumstances that you have no other way than to surrender to Krsna. Yes. That is special favor. That is special favor.

Is Krsna your father's servant?

Bhargava: ... allow the Muslims to enter and do so much damage to the Vedic culture?

Prabhupada: Hm?

Bhargava: Why did Krsna allow the Muslims to enter and do so much damage to the...

Prabhupada: Krsna is your father's servant that you do something wrong and Krsna has to check it? Is your Krsna your father's servant? Then why do you ask this question? If you allow somebody to cut your head, has Krsna to come to save you? Why do you ask this nonsense question? You are Krsna conscious. Samo 'ham sarva-bhutesu. If you cut your own head, what Krsna will do? In the same term, nationalism, as Vedic culture is Krsna's national affair, your disease is there. Why Krsna will come to save the Vedic culture? What business He has got? If you are spoiling it, then why Krsna will come? Spoil, and suffer. (break) ... the same question in a different way, "Why India? Why Krsna?" as if Krsna is Indian. Krsna is Indian? Then why do you ask this question, that "Krsna will come to save India's culture?"

Bhargava: Not the Indian culture but the Vedic culture, Krsna's culture.

Prabhupada: Vedic culture, He has given, Bhagavad-gita. Why don't you accept it? You don't accept; then suffer. He has given His instruction. The government gives you the law. Now, when you violate, the government will come to stop you? You violate and suffer. Why do you expect that "When I violate the laws, the government men will come and stop me?" Why do you expect like that? Eh? The government can give you the law book. You consult and do accordingly. You'll be happy. And if you don't, against, the government man is not coming to stop you. You do and suffer. Krsna says, "Whenever there is discrepancy, I come." That is general, not for India. Vedic culture is not for India. It is for everyone.

Can we request Krsna to force us to surrender to Him, due to our conditioning?

Devotee: ...withdraw that independence, can we request Krsna to force us to surrender to Him, due to our conditioning?

Prabhupada: Yes, you can request Him. And He sometimes forces. He puts you in such circumstances that you have no other way than to surrender to Krsna. Yes. That is special favor. That is special favor. Yes. My spiritual master wanted me to preach, but I did not like it, but he forced me. Yes. That is my practical experience. I had no desire to accept the sannyasa order and preach, but my spiritual master wanted it. I am not very much inclined, but he forced me. That is also done. That is special favor. When he forced me, at that time, I thought that "What is this? What...? I am committing some mistake or what is that?" I was puzzled. But a little after, I could understand that it is the greatest favor shown to me. You see? So when Krsna forces somebody to surrender, that is a great favor. But generally, He does not do so. But He does so to a person who is very sincere to Krsna's service but at the same time he has got slight desire for material enjoyment. In that case He does, that "This foolish person does not know that material facility will never make him happy, and he is sincerely seeking My favor. So he is foolish. Therefore whatever resource, little resource he has got for material enjoyment, break it. Then he will have no other alternative than to surrender unto Me." That is stated in the Bhagavad-gita, er, Srimad-Bhagavatam. Yasyaham anughrnami harisye tad-dhanam sanaih. Krsna says that "If I do somebody special favor, then I make him poverty-stricken. I take away all his means of sense enjoyment." You see? That is stated in the Srimad-Bhagavatam. Because here in this material world everyone is trying to be happy by earning more money, by business, by service, by this way or that way. But in special cases Krsna makes his business or service unsuccessful. Do you like that? (laughs) At that time he has no other alternative than to surrender to Krsna. You see? But sometimes, when we are unsuccessful in our business attempt or earning attempt, we become sorry that "Oh, Krsna is so cruel upon me that I could not trust in this." But that is His favor, special favor. You should understand like that. Yes. (end)
